Zach PiatkowskiIncoming Canastota senior Zach Piatkowski,is the 2017 winner of the New Horizon award from the National Polka Association. The award is given annually to one “musically talented person who shows extreme interest in performing polka music’’ in the United States.

Zach plays saxophone and clarinet in a polka band with seven of his friends. He said he also can play keyboard, but does not do so with his band. The group is made up of musicians from throughout New York and they do most of their rehearsing in the Albany area.

Zach says he comes by his interest in polka music naturally, his dad plays the accordion in a band and while his mom does not play an instrument, Zach said she does know all of the dances. He said he has been interested in music since he was 4 and he plans to go into the medical field, he also wants to choose a college with a good music program Zach is enrolled in the Madison-Oneida BOCES New Horizons program for his senior year..

Zach picked up his award and was honored at the group’s Polka Convention in Cleveland, Ohio.
