James E. Caldwell

James CaldwellA 1961 graduate of Canastota Central Schools, James (Jim) spent several months working on Wall Street as part of his MVCC education receiving a Real Estate and Banking Degree in 1963. Jim earned a Certified Insurance Counselor Degree from a National Education Program in 1989 and continues to take one or two classes a year to keep up with any procedural changes.

Jim’s fifty-four year insurance career includes ten years of employment with Kemper Insurance and an eleven-year partnership with the Brewster Insurance Company of Oneida. Jim purchased the Canastota and Utica offices in 1984, creating the present Caldwell Insurance Company.

Relative to his career, Jim served on the Professional Agents Association Advisory Council for several years. He has enjoyed a twenty-year career as the instructor of Insurance and Business Law at the Utica School of Commerce.

Jim’s special interest in education had him serving as President of the Canastota Board of Education, and as President of the Madison-Herkimer-Oneida School Boards Association. He was presented with the 1984 Achievement Award from this organization. For the next five years, Jim served as Area 5 Director for the New York State School Boards Association representing districts from Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison and Oneida counties.

Jim holds the titles of Past President of the Canastota Little League, of the Canastota Rotary Club and of the Canastota Chamber of Commerce. He is a Past Treasurer for The United Church of Canastota and served as Chairman of the Joe Larue Memorial Fishing Derby for fifteen years; raising money for several community programs.

Jim also served as Field Announcer for the Madison County Special Olympics events for severalCaldwell Yearbook years. Community service awards include the 1979 Canastota Chamber Appreciation Award, the Canastota Civic Club Service Award in 1997, the 1998 Community Award from the Canastota Police Department and the Vincent V. Albanese Alumni Achievement Award.

At present Jim oversees the Canastota Civic Club dinner program and serves on the Canastota Alumni Association Committee. Jim was instrumental in reactivating the Greater Canastota Chamber of Commerce in 2016

Jim and wife Gerry, married fifty-four years, live on Oneida Lake in the home that Jim was reared in. Gerry has worked alongside Jim in the business and they are proud to call Canastota their home. The central focus of their lives is family and consists of daughter Faith, son-in-law Greg, two grandchildren Kirsten and Justin, and the recent additions to the family; twin great granddaughters Myah and Maggie and their new sister Marie.

Despite a busy schedule, Jim always finds time to help needy community residents in various ways. On summer weekends, Jim takes the time to enjoy fishing on Oneida Lake with his good friends.
