Dr. Michael  Clarke - 1981


Michael Clarke graduated from Canastota Central Schools with a Regents Diploma in 1981.  A member of the National Honor Society, he was also a member of the Ski Club and Science Club. He worked part-time at Rite Aid on weekends and he still found time to participate in baseball, wrestling and soccer. He continued his education at Albany College of Pharmacy, graduating in 1986, followed by Residency in Hospital Pharmacy at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut.  In the fall of 1992, Michael entered the Doctor of Pharmacy program at the University of Buffalo, graduating in 1995. 

From 1987 to 1992, Michael worked at John Hopkins Hospital where he held the position of Clinical Staff Pharmacist in Surgery Critical Care and then that of the Senior Clinical Pharmacist in Adult Internal Medicine.  He continued his career at both the Inova Health System as Clinical Coordinator at Fairfax Hospital and Clinical Specialist, Critical Care / Research at Alexandra Hospital until the year 2005.  Michael then accepted the position of Director of Pharmacy for the Inova Fair Oaks Hospital where he worked for the next two years.  In 2007, Michael was offered the position of Assistant Dean/Assistant Professor for the VCU School of Pharmacy for the Inova Campus and continues in this role at present. During his tenure, he was Vice –Chair of the Institutional Review Board, Inova Health System from 2008 to 2017.  

During his career Dr. Clarke has remained active in several professional organizations, including Maryland Society of Health-System Pharmacists (MSHP) - serving as Chair, Public Affairs and co-editor of the MSHP Newsletter.  He is a long-standing member of VSHP, including Region 2 President, as well as serving on the Education Committee. Michael holds membership in the American Society of Health Systems Pharmacists (ASHP), American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP), the American Pharmaceutical Association (APHA) and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP). Michael is also a member of the Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity. 

Community Service efforts involved serving on the Board of Directors of NOVA Scripts Central - a not-for-profit pharmacy serving patients of Free Clinics in Northern Virginia.  He was recognized by NSC and received the Board of Directors Service Award.  Also active in his community, Michael has spent many years as a volunteer with the Fairfax Little League as coach, umpire and on the Board of Directors.   Michael also chaired the Corporate Sponsors for the WT Woodson HS Athletic Boosters.  He is a founding member of the Braddock District Land Use Committee for Fairfax County. Michael, along with his family, has volunteered for Meals on Wheels, Northern Virginia Hypothermia Program and FACETS Meal Preparation and Delivery to Fairfax County homeless.

Michael and his wife Sandy of twenty-eight years, live in Fairfax, Virginia.  Their son Mitchell, is a junior at Virginia Tech majoring in Economics and Political Science and daughter, Carolyn, is a junior at WT Woodson High School.
