James c. Jones graduated from Canastota High School in 1966 with a Regents Diploma. During his years at CHS, Jim participated in several club and sports activities and, as part of the Advanced Biology program participated in the Hartwick College Biology Seminar. He earned a 1966 New York State Regents Scholarship. After graduation, Jim attended the State University College at Fredonia majoring in Secondary Education Biology. He has always credited his high school biology teacher, Ms. Madeline Snyder, for his career path in the biological sciences. After college Jim accepted a position with Bristol- Myers Squibb which led to a career path of 37 years. During the time at BMS, he held the titles as lab technician, associate research scientist and QA/QC laboratory supervisor. A great source of pride for Jim is the part he played in helping to bring to market many anti- infective and cancer fighting drugs during his career. Jim received the President’s award from BMS for being part of the development team for a product release. During these years Jim also assisted at the BMS Syracuse site as radiation safety officer, narcotics control officer and as incident commander as part of the hazardous materials response team. In post-retirement he continues to consult with many drug companies throughout the world on the development and approval of their drug products 

 Jim’s career with the fire service covered over 30 years starting with the Delano Hose company of the Canastota Fire Department. During those years he held many offices up to and including Chief of the department from 1984 -1986 and 1990 to 1992. During the first term, Canastota was able to build and utilize a training facility that was considered state of the art. In 1987, Jim was appointed a New York State Fire Instructor by the State Office of Fire Prevention and Control; a position he held for 15 years. As an instructor, he had the responsibility to train firefighters throughout Madison County and central New York. He was also hired by the New York State Fire Chief’s Association to train at seminars throughout the state. In 1991, Jim held the office of President of the Madison County Fire Chief’s Association.

The involvement in community affairs continued in 1987 with his appointment as Code Enforcement Officer for the Village of Canastota. He has served on the Town of Lenox Board of Assessment Review continuously since 1994.  He has also been a member of the Town of Lenox Planning Board for about ten years, serving as chairman for the last five years.  Jim coached Canastota Little League teams from 1980 -1983, one of the most rewarding jobs of a lifetime.

Jim’s wife, Sandra is a 1968 graduate of CHS and retired from Morrisville State College. His daughter Tracy graduated from CHS in 1987 and followed in his footsteps to Fredonia State and then Lemoyne College. She is currently a 5th grade teacher at Roberts Street Elementary School. Jim’s son Jamie, a 1990 graduate of CHS, pursued a career with the U.S Postal service working in many offices throughout Central New York including Canastota. He is currently postmaster for the City of Oneida. A great source of pride for Jim is his five grandchildren all of whom have been members of the National Honor Society.

Jim will always feel a debt of gratitude to the Canastota Schools, the Village of Canastota, and the Town of Lenox for providing a phenomenal environment to grow up in and to raise a family.
